The University is grateful to the donors who have provided these private scholarships. Recipients will be asked to write a personal thank you letter to the donor acknowledging their scholarship award. The scholarship award amounts are listed beside each description and will be disbursed evenly between the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. 

Please note: If the recipient will graduate in Fall 2012, the full amount will be dispersed that semester. A student who will graduate in Summer 2012 IS NOT eligible for a scholarship.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIPS — the criteria below apply to all university- wide scholarships, unless otherwise specified under the additional specific criteria for each award.

  • Fully admitted, undergraduate OR graduate, degree-seeking student.
  • Undergraduate student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, unless otherwise indicated, as of December 2011.
  • Graduate student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, unless otherwise indicated, as of December 2011.
  • Student must be enrolled FULL-time: at least 12 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits during the term of the award, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Submission of a typed personal statement (double-spaced, two-page maximum) that describes your educational goals and tells how being a recipient of a scholarship will help you fulfill them.
    • GRADUATE applicants' essays should focus on career/professional ambitions.
  • Submission of (1) letter of recommendation on professional letterhead. Letter MUST be from a teacher/ professor/other professional who can attest to student’s academic potential, leadership qualities, and/or community service.
  • Students awarded scholarships will be required to share their name, field of study or major, and GPA with the donor funding the scholarship, and to write a thank you letter to the donor.

GENERAL APPLICATION
OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS


ADOLFO HENRIQUES SCHOLARSHIP: $500 — Meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. (5 awards)

C.A.M.P 4 JUSTICE HUMAN RIGHTS SCHOLARSHIP: $1,750  —Recipients must meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. In addition, applicants must: (1) demonstrate personal commitment and dedication to furthering the cause of human rights as evident from active involvement in human rights activities or organizations; (2) demonstrate financial need as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid; and (3) be a US citizen or permanent resident.  The principal criteria for selection of scholarship recipients will be: (1) demonstrated commitment to furthering the cause of human rights; (2) outstanding academic performance and/or potential; and (3) progress toward acquisition of a bachelor’s degree.  Applicant must submit an additional personal statement or essay indicating his/her vision of the role of human rights in our society and his/her dedication to the furtherance of human rights.  (2 awards)

DR. EMILIO JANÉ SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000.  Degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in or accepted for admission to FIU. Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need, as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid, and be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent resident. Recipients must be descendants of former residents of Cuba, in honor of Dr. Emilio Jané. (10 awards)

JANE D. COPE SCHOLARSHIP: $500 — Meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. (1 award)

JEAN-CLAUDE GARCIA-ZAMOR SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 — Degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in or accepted for admission to FIU. Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need, as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid, and be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent resident.  At the time of application, student will affirm in writing that they are of Haitian American descent. For the purposes of this scholarship, “Haitian American” is defined as an individual of Haitian ancestry who, at the time of application, is an individual who lives in the United States and is either a United States citizen of has permanent resident status in the United States. (8 awards)

LUCILLE E. SNAITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $5,000 — Degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in or accepted for admission to FIU in any school or college, except the Honors College. Applicants must have demonstrated academic excellence in secondary school if they are entering freshmen; in their undergraduate academic course of study at FIU or elsewhere, if they are entering graduate students; or, if already enrolled at FIU, at the University, that is commensurate with scholarship-level students. Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need, as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid. Applicants must be US citizens and residents of Miami-Dade or Broward County, FL at the time of the application. (1 award)

MANUEL & MERCEDES MOSTEIRO SCHOLARSHIP: $500 —Demonstrated academic merit and/or financial need as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid.  (12 awards)

NEW DONOR MATCHING SCHOLARSHIP: $500 — Meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. (2 awards)

RALPH SANCHEZ GRAND PRIX SCHOLARSHIP: $500 — Meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. (4 awards)

RUTH FORMAN SCHOLARSHIP: $500   — Meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. (1 award)

 


GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY


PERRY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP: $2,500- Graduate student, enrolled full-time (min 9 credits), minimum GPA 3.5, and demonstrated financial need as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid. (3 awards)


UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY


ARMANDO ALEJANDRE JR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $3,500 Recipient must be an undergraduate student, enrolled full-time in an approved degree-seeking program at FIU.  Recipient must be a graduating senior or student who graduated from Immaculata – LaSalle High School in Miami, Florida and who maintained a cumulative grade point average at LaSalle of at least 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale. This GPA requirement may be waived for applicant(s) who have completed at least 2 semesters at FIU or any other regionally-accredited college or university and have a cumulative grade point average at institutions previously attended of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. (2 awards)


BADIA SPICES SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 — Recipients must be students, enrolled full-time in an approved degree program at FIU. They must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 = “A” scale) during each term they hold the Badia Spices Scholarship. Applicant must be a US citizen or permanent resident in addition to being a resident of Miami-Dade or Broward County. Financial need may also be taken into consideration in the selection of scholarship recipients. Priority may be given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in, or a commitment to, the spice industry. Active involvement in related professional associations or with companies involved in the spice industry could be accepted as indication of such interest. (4 awards)

BADIA SPICES – JOSE MARTI SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 — Recipients must be undergraduate students, enrolled full-time in an approved degree-seeking program at FIU. They must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 = “A” scale) during each term they hold the Badia Spices – Jose Marti Scholarship.  Applicant must be a US citizen or permanent resident in addition to being a resident of Miami-Dade or Broward County.  Applicant must submit an additional one-page essay on one literary work or speech by the Cuban writer and orator, Jose Marti. (5 awards)

BANK OF AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP $2,000 — Entering freshman, minimum 3.3 GPA in secondary school, first time in college, demonstrated financial need. Scholarship may be renewed up to three additional years provided recipient maintains normal progress toward degree, full-time enrollment, and a cumulative 3.0 GPA as well as a minimum 3.0 GPA per semester and funds are available. Applicant must submit an additional personal statement or essay indicating strong history of community service. (2 awards)

BETTY G. READER SCHOLARSHIP: Up to $4,000 – This scholarship serves to alleviate the financial burden of students who do not generally qualify for free financial aid but have financial need. Applicants should mainly be funding their education via loans, funds from the scholarship will be used to reduce/pay off loans the student acquires to pay tuition and fees while enrolled. Applicant must have student loans registered in the Office of Financial Aid. Amount of aid provided will be up to $4,000 per term (Fall/Spring), not to exceed applicant’s loan amounts. Recipient must be a fully-admitted, undergraduate, degree-seeking student who enrolled at FIU as a freshman in Fall 2012. Applicant must be a graduate of a public or private high school in Miami-Dade or Broward County, and must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident who has been a resident of Florida for at least three (3) years. Applicant must have shown exemplary service to the community (as determined by student’s personal statement), preference will be given to service to the Jewish Community. Applicant must intend to pursue a professional degree, including but not limited to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math), business, education, accounting, journalism, management, or nursing. Recipients must enroll in at least 12 undergraduate credit hours each Fall and Spring semester at FIU in one of the approved degree programs including but not limited to those noted above. Applicant’s letter of recommendation must attest to applicant’s performance within the past two (2) years. (up to 12 awards)

Recipients are eligible for annual renewal on the condition that the Betty G. Reader Scholar remains eligible and the funds are available. Requirements to maintain eligibility are:

  • Reapply annually.
  • Remain a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal permanent resident who is a resident of Florida.
  • Continue to demonstrate need and loan relief as reported by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Continue to demonstrate exemplary service to the community (as determined by the Scholar’s annual personal statement).
  • Personal statement from a college professor is received.
  • Remain continuously enrolled full time, in at least 12 undergraduate credits during each Fall and Spring semester, unless otherwise approved, in an approved degree program at FIU, including but not limited to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math), business, education, accounting, journalism, management, or nursing.
  • Makes appropriate progress towards an approved degree.
  • Maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Does not violate any of the University’s code of academic integrity provisions.

BRITTANY COMEAU MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000+ — Degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in or accepted for admission to FIU. Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need, as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid. Preference will be given to students who are past residents of Haiti or descendants of past residents of Haiti with a demonstrated interest in women’s issues (as determined by applicant’s personal statement). (1 award)

HARRIET ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP: $500 — Minimum 3.2 GPA, demonstrated financial need as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid. (2 awards)

JACLYN ELISSE TORREALBA SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 – Recipient must meet minimum scholarship eligibility requirements as listed above. In addition, recipient must be an undergraduate student, enrolled full-time at FIU pursuing a major in Political Science.  Recipient must be a graduating senior or alumnus of G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School in Miami, Florida with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 based on a 4.0 scale. In the event there are no political science applicants, the scholarship may go to a student pursuing any course of study, so long as they are an alumnus of Braddock. (1 award)

MERCEDES G. CARREÑO SCHOLARSHIP: $500 – Female at least 30 years of age, resuming college-level studies after a hiatus. Must have completed at least 60 credits at an accredited college or university. Is currently a degree-seeking Graduate or undergraduate student at FIU. Demonstrated financial need as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid. United States citizenship or permanent resident. Enrolled for minimum of 9 credits during the semester receiving the scholarship. Submit additional essay (500-1,000 words) describing personal circumstances and career goals, and where recipient hopes to be 10 years hence.  Once awarded, scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of 3additional semesters provided recipient maintains a 3.3 GPA and is enrolled for a minimum of 9 credits. (1 award)

SARAH & SOLOMON ROSENBERG SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 — Degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in or accepted for admission to FIU and majoring (or interested in majoring) in Engineering or Computer Science. Applicants must have demonstrated academic excellence in secondary school if they are entering freshmen; in their undergraduate academic course of study at FIU or elsewhere, if already enrolled at FIU and that is commensurate with scholarship-level students. Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need, as determined by the federal financial aid form (FAFSA) from the Office of Financial Aid. (4 awards)

SEDANO’S FAMILY 1ST GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 — Undergraduate students enrolled for at least 6 credits per term. A legal Florida resident who qualifies for Florida Resident Tuition. Neither parent earned a Bachelor’s degree. Demonstrated financial need determined by filing a FAFSA.  Preference given to employees or immediate family (spouses, siblings, children or grandchildren) of Sedano’s Supermarkets or Sedano’s Pharmacies and Discount Stores. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic performance or potential and the extent of unmet financial need. Scholarships may be renewed provided funds are available and the recipients continue to maintain eligibility criteria and make satisfactory progress towards an undergraduate degree. Indicate that you meet each of these criteria in your personal statement. (3 awards)
